THE DEFENCE OF STALINGRAD: A CRUCIAL LESSON IN THE STRUGGLE AGAINST IMPERIALISM AND FASCISM

The defence of Stalingrad is, in a single word, resistance. Resistance means paying a price. Those who resist win. Those who surrender perish.

Stalingrad is a victory won with the blood of millions, in 6 months, 2 weeks, and 2 days. It marks the beginning of a process where fascism was halted, pushed back, and ultimately destroyed.

As of July 17, 1942, the German Army had reached the outskirts of Stalingrad and launched its campaign to capture the city. On August 22, 1942, the Nazi forces began their assault on Stalingrad. Waves of bombs fell relentlessly as heavy artillery and air raids pounded the city. Within a week, German planes conducted 1,600 sorties, dropping a total of 1,000 tons of bombs and massacring 40,000 people.

Following the bombardment, German tank divisions advanced toward Stalingrad. The weather was scorching hot. The tanks managed to push forward 40 kilometres. It was August 23. But then, this armoured group suddenly had to stop. Anti-aircraft fire rained down upon them. The ones firing those guns were young women—volunteers who had just graduated from high school. They were the first to confront the enemy on the ground. With fierce determination, they pulled the trigger, refusing to back down.

“This was the first page of the Stalingrad defence.”

These young women refused to retreat into shelters and continued to fight. Even the enemy was astonished by their courage. The battle raged on. The fascist German tank group managed to suppress them only through intense bombardment, killing these brave young Soviet women. But this was only the beginning. The entire world would witness how every Soviet citizen, every militia member, and every Red Army soldier fought tenaciously to defend their homeland.

“We will never surrender the city where we were born. Let’s build barricades on every street. Let’s turn every district, every block, every building into an impregnable fortress!”

“We will not abandon our city to the Germans! Organize brigades, build barricades, and fill every street with obstacles so that the soldiers defending Stalingrad can annihilate the enemy mercilessly!”

The Red Army soldiers fought to their last drop of blood. They knew that not only the Soviet people, but all the people of the world stood with them. 40,000 Red Army soldiers resisted the German forces. Whether they were 40,000 or 40, they were determined to fight against fascism. They cried out in defiance, determined to free their homeland from fascist enslavement:

“Beyond the Volga, there is no land!”

The German Army managed to enter the city in September, but they never managed to leave.

With the slogan “Everything for the front, everything for victory!”, the Soviet people—young and old—supported the Red Army by producing behind the lines and fighting selflessly on the front.

And as the great leader Stalin foresaw:

“The day when the enemy’s back will be broken and crushed under the blows of the Red Army is not far. A day of celebration will come to our neighbourhoods as well.”

Victory was achieved on February 2, 1943, when the encircled 6th Nazi Army surrendered.

FASCISM HAS BEEN CONDEMNED BY THE PEOPLE OF THE WORLD. IT IS A TOOL OF IMPERIALISM AND IS DESTINED TO BE ERASED FROM HISTORY.

ON ITS 82ND ANNIVERSARY THE VICTORY OF STALINGRAD IS THE GREATEST EXAMPLE OF THIS.

For showing us this example, we owe an eternal debt of gratitude to the Soviet people and their/our leader, Stalin.
