The Draft People’s Constitution was first published in April 1997. It was after Susurluk scandal.
Its second edition was published in June 2001, following the “economic crisis”, at a time when complete submission to the IMF was taking place.
Its third edition was published in October 2002, on the eve of yet another electoral game by the oligarchy.
The AKP, which was brought to power by the 3 November 2002 elections, is still in government, and now the “new constitution” put on the agenda by the AKP is being discussed.
We are republishing the Draft People’s Constitution as one of the answers given to this debate from the standpoint of the people.
All the forces of the existing order are trying to convince us that there is no solution outside the status quo. But there is! The Draft People’s Constitution shows our people this solution.
The name of this solution is PEOPLE’S POWER.
The establishment of People’s Power means creating the basis for solving all the problems we experience today. By putting forward this draft, we are calling on the people to struggle for their own power.
The Draft People’s Constitution shows how an Independent and Democratic Turkey can be built.
There is no doubt that the ruling classes will not build such a system. Such a country will not come into being by itself. The task of building an Independent and Democratic Turkey belongs to the people. Only the people can be the architects of an independent and democratic future and of a constitution corresponding to that future.
Let us make our own constitution!
Let us make the People’s Constitution!
*
We repeat our call with the following words taken from the introduction to the first edition of the Draft People’s Constitution:
“OUR CALL is for an independent country.
OUR CALL is for a democratic country.
OUR CALL is for a free country.
OUR CALL is for the rights of people of all nations, minorities and beliefs.
To defend this constitution and to struggle for this constitution means struggling for an independent and democratic country.”
