The program of today was a very successful and constructive day in terms of the defense of basic human rights and freedom of expression.
The Second Day of the International Symposium for Justice was dedicated to Ebru Timtik, a lawyer in Turkey who decided to take up resistance along with her colleague and comrade Aytac Ünsal to demand the right to a fair trial. She has lost her life on the 238th day of death fast. Her struggle has united lots of people including many lawyers worldwide.
Shortly after being released due to his bad health condition, Aytac Ünsal was arbitrarily re-arrested despite serious diseases after 215 days hunger strike, and he’s now even being denied proper treatment.
The resistance of the people’s lawyers is to defend the lawyer’s profession against the attacks of a political system that seeks to remove all principles of law, step by step in the protection of its interests.
The lawyers of the People’s Law Office were put in prison for carrying out their profession, for acting as guarantees of justice for the marginalized and oppressed people in their country as well as for opposing all kinds of state violence and war crimes.
In this Symposium, a total of 75 individuals and progressive, social networks and movements have gathered to share their statements and comments on very recent global issues, while expressing common positions against ongoing wars of aggression, exploitation, injustices, repression on social movements, and progressive forces all over the world.
On Day 2 of the Symposium–3rd April–around 20 lawyers from different democratic lawyer’s associations in and outside of Europe, as well as a deputy of the Left Party in Germany had an intensive discussion on how to protect the basic rights of the peoples as well as of social and political movements struggling on the side of the working class.
They further highlighted the importance to unify with the demands of social and political movements, defending the fundamental rights of those marginalized and confronted with repression. It was also theorised to find new ways in a common struggle to protect the principles of law and to defend the lawyer’s profession.
The 3rd and last day of the Symposium–4th of April–will deal with the heritage of revolutionary art, which has been targeted by the political powers and rulers throughout history. There have been lots of examples for it from the past till today.
Grup Yorum’s way of performing art, to confront the politics of exploitation and oppression in support of the poor, is the starting point for this gathering.
Last year, two musicians of the band Grup Yorum in Turkey, the vocalist of the group Helin Bölek and bass guitarist Ibrahim Gökcek lost their lives in a death fast for free performance, against the repression and criminalization of the band members.
Together with Grup Yorum, several artists will debate in 3 sessions about the importance of the art of resistance and speaking out for the interests of the oppressed in the world.
The program includes artists from various European countries, relatives of Helin and Ibrahim, a lawyer of Grup Yorum in Germany, and some of those solidarity movements which arose from this resistance.
Among the participants, there will also be the lawyer of communist Catalan rap musician Pablo Hasel, who has been arrested a few months ago for his critical revolutionary song texts and didn’t bow to the ban on the freedom of speech.
As in previous days, the whole live program will be simultaneously translated into 7 languages by voluntary interpreters.
